What’s New?

First-order reversal curve (FORC) diagrams are a powerful method to characterise the hysteresis properties of magnetic grain ensembles within rocks and sediments. Methods of processing, analysis and simulation of FORC diagrams have developed rapidly over the past few years, dramatically expanding the utility of FORC diagrams within fundamental rock and environmental magnetic research. Advances in FORC analysis have been facilitated by the availability of a powerful, if somewhat disparate, set of processing tools (e.g. FORCinel1, FORCem2, FORCulator3, VARIFORC4). We are pleased to announce the latest release of FORCinel (Version 3.0), which aims to integrate many of these developments into a unified, user-friendly package running within Igor Pro (www.wavemetrics.com).

FORCinel v. 3.0 can be downloaded from the NanoPaleoMagnetism website. The release is accompanied by a series of video tutorials outlining each of the new features, which include:

  1. dramatically improved work flow, with unified smoothing approach;
  2. up-to 8-fold increase in processing speed using multiple processors;
  3. control of output resolution, enabling large datasets (> 500 FORCs) to be smoothed in a matter of seconds;
  4. load, process, analyse and average multiple FORC diagrams;
  5. load and process non-gridded data and data acquired on non-PMC systems;
  6. improved method for exploring optimal smoothing parameters;
  7. interactive and un-doable data-pretreatments for the removal of common processing artefacts;
  8. automated detection and removal of measurement outliers;
  9. improved interactive method for the generation and optimisation of colour scales;
  10. full integration with FORCem2 – supervised quantitative unmixing of FORC diagrams using principle component analysis (PCA);
  11. full integration with FORCulator3 – a micromagnetic simulation suite for calculating the FORC diagram for interacting ensembles of uniaxial and cubic single domain particles.
  12. kinetic Monte Carlo simulation of TRM acquisition in interacting ensembles of uniaxial single domain particles based on the algorithm of Shcherbakov5.
  13. Igor Pro 7 compatible.
